The proliferation of space objects is a rapidly increasing source of artificial night sky brightness

چکیده
The population of artificial satellites and space debris orbiting the Earth imposes non-negligible constraints on both operations ground-based optical radio astronomy. ongoing deployment several satellite `mega-constellations' in 2020s represents an additional threat that raises significant concerns. expected severity its unwanted consequences is still under study, including interference information loss by streaks appearing science images. In this Letter, we report a new skyglow effect produced objects: increased night sky brightness caused sunlight reflected scattered large set bodies whose direct radiance diffuse component when observed with naked eye or low angular resolution photometric instruments. According to our preliminary estimates, zenith luminance light pollution source may have already reached $\sim$20 $\mu$cd m$^{-2}$, which amounts approximately 10 percent increase over determined natural sources light. This critical limit adopted 1979 International Astronomical Union for level not be exceeded at sites astronomical observatories.

The new world atlas of artificial night sky brightness
Artificial lights raise night sky luminance, creating the most visible effect of light pollution-artificial skyglow. Despite the increasing interest among scientists in fields such as ecology, astronomy, health care, and land-use planning, light pollution lacks a current quantification of its magnitude on a global scale. To overcome this, we present the world atlas of artificial sky luminance, ...
متن کاملArtificial light alters natural regimes of night-time sky brightness
Artificial light is globally one of the most widely distributed forms of anthropogenic pollution. However, while both the nature and ecological effects of direct artificial lighting are increasingly well documented, those of artificial sky glow have received little attention. We investigated how city lights alter natural regimes of lunar sky brightness using a novel ten month time series of meas...
متن کاملThe first world atlas of the artificial night sky brightness 3
We present the first World Atlas of the zenith artificial night sky brightness at sea level. Based on radiance calibrated high resolution DMSP satellite data and on accurate modelling of light propagation in the atmosphere, it provides a nearly global picture of how mankind is proceeding to envelope itself in a luminous fog. Comparing the Atlas with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) populatio...
متن کاملThe artificial night sky brightness mapped from DMSP satellite Operational Linescan System measurements
We present a method to map the artificial sky brightness across large territories in astronomical photometric bands with a resolution of approximately 1 km. This is useful to quantify the situation of night sky pollution, to recognize potential astronomical sites and to allow future monitoring of trends. The artificial sky brightness present in the chosen direction at a given position on the Ea...
متن کاملVariations in the sky brightness during a lunar eclipse
A total lunar eclipse is conjectured to have influence on the physical conditions of an environmental area, particularly on the brightness of the sky. The phenomenon might also be relevant on weather parameters change on Earth, such as temperature, humidity and pressure, though a straightforward correlation is not easy to establish. This work mainly aims at measuring the brightness of the sky a...
